Being an engineer by birth, not just by training or education, how anything is made is interesting to me. Making Double Edge Razor blades is no exception. Now that I think about it, I wonder if I have more fun making Almaden Shaving oil, using it or telling others about how wonderful it is and seeing them enjoy it too…
Making Double Edge Razor Blades
The manufacturing process for making double edge razor blades contains several steps to ensure the razor blades are produced to plan. Blades begin as “life” as long strips of steel and go through temperature treatments, grindings, sharpenings, coatings, and quality checks before they are packaged for sale to traditional wet-shavers. The show “How It’s Made” visited a double edge razor blade factory (Croma brand, Germany) and documented the full manufacturing process for their double edge blades in the video below.
The joke when I was growing up was that old Navy ships, once they were decommissioned, were sold for scrap to become razor blades. Here is a video about making double edge razor blades.

So let me know what you think of your visit to the inside of a factory making double edge razor blades. What was your favorite step of the process? I’m really not sure what my favorite is… one of my kids (boy) liked the heat treatment step because of the flames (fire).
