Disposing Double Edge Razor Blades

Disposing double edge razor bladesDisposing Double Edge Razor Blades is a common question for new Double Edge Razor Blade Shavers. The blades are really thin and really sharp even after they’ve been used to shave your face, legs, underarms, privates… What is the best way to safely dispose of Double Edge Razor Blades?

You could collect them in a box or other container and throw the container away. Here are several commercial options for recycling or disposing double edge razor blades that you may want to consider:
Feather
Olfa
Olfa 2

A small match box would work too when disposing double edge razor blades.

I prefer to not have another thing in my medicine cabinet to keep track of or make space for.   So I created a disposal slot like I remember seeing my dad use some 50 years ago.  There was a slot in the back of the medicine cabinet that he put the used blades in when disposing double edge razor blades.

Medicine cabinet modification for disposing double edge razor blades.

My project took me about 15 minutes to complete.  I did no design work and would only change one thing if I were to do it again…  Basically, all I did was take a drill, rasp, file and stud sensor and go to town.  Step one is to locate the studs so that when I cut the slot, it would open into the void space of the wall and not end up on the stud.  Use the stud finder to locate the studs behind the cabinet and choose a location that makes sense for you.  Use a 1/8th inch or 3/16th inch drill bit to drill a hole through the cabinet and wallboard.  Here’s what I would do differently: I drilled a horizontal hole.  I would drill at a 30 to 45 degree angle so that the blade falls down into the void space more easily.  Drill several holes immediately adjacent to each other to form a slot wide enough to accommodate the blade.  Use the wood rasp or file to smooth out and even the lower edge of the slot into a nice planar surface.

You probably have enough space to dispose of hundreds or thousands of blades.  If you were to use 2 blades a week, or 100/year, I bet you’ve got a couple of decades of space at a minimum.  I read where someone was using one of those cases for disposing double edge razor blades and had not filled up the case after they had put over 50! blades in it.

Hope you find this as helpful in disposing of used blades as I do.  It is almost as cool as how much Almaden Shaving Oil improves your shaving experience.   I’ll get a photo in here soon so you can see how I did it.   There really isn’t much to look at…

If you don’t think you can do this project, hire a handyman.  If he can’t do the modification for disposing double edge razor blades to your medicine cabinet in under an hour, he’s not very handy.  (Have him read this article before coming over)
